Motorcycle Theory Test Explained

Why

The theory test is an instant way of understanding your current motorcycle road awareness, this is different to what you would experience in a car.
If you have taken a car theory test that includes both multiple choice and hazard perception then the format of this test will be nothing new for you, but you will have questions aimed specifically at motorcyclists.

When

The theory test can be taken any point from your 16th birthday, and must be completed before taking your practical test – parts 1 & 2.
You don’t need to do your theory test to ride on a CBT certificate, although it may help with passing the theory and will make you more aware of hazards that can be experienced when riding a motorcycle/moped.

Where

You can only take your theory test at an approved DSA test centre.
You can arrange your booking online at DirectGov – Booking Motorcycle Theory Test.

You can also arrange your test via several service providers that will offer additional services.

How

The theory test is split into two sections:

1. Multiple choice

A set of 50 multiple choice questions, you need to get 43+ correct answered to pass this module.

You can take upto 57 minutes to complete this section.

You have the ability to flag questions that you are unsure of the answer and return to them when you have moved through through the test.

The question style varies throughout the test from selecting a single correct answer to selecting multiple answers, each question has a clear indication of the number of answers they are expecting.

2. Hazard perception

Following the completion of the multiple choice you will begin the hazard perception section, this involves watching a series of video clips filmed from a drivers point of view. Clicking the mouse when you see a potential hazard developing.

With a maximum of 75 points available you are required to score 45 to achieve a pass grade.

The Results

Following the completion of the two above items you can collect your results from the examiner, they will provide some general feedback.

If you have passed you then have 2 years from this date to pass you practical test (both part 1 & 2) or you will have to go through this all again!

Didn’t pass? No worries, give it another go. You know the format and will hopefully be more relaxed next time round.
